Barotrauma Review

Undertow Game’s Barotrauma is an FTL-inspired survival game. I was always a fan of SCP: Containment Breach, so I was always interested in Barotrauma. I hesitated though, thinking the gameplay loop would be boring, but after trying the game almost a year ago now, I couldn’t’ve been more wrong. Barotrauma is more just than a survival game, it’s also somewhat of a role-playing game, allowing players to take different roles.

The role system makes it extremely fun to play with friends. I’m a fan of playing the captain, navigating the ship and ordering my friends around through the icy waters of an alien planet. On top of having to manage repairs, the waters on the planet Europa are filled with creatures just waiting to break into your submarine and maul you and your crew to death. So many times, has our entire boat been filled with water, just lying on the very bottom of the sea and we just must push through, trying our best to fix everything.

Barotrauma is excellent, I love the gameplay as well as the whole roleplay system. There are so many different classes, each with three individual subclasses some helpful like Engineer’s “Weapons Engineer”, some not so much, like the Assistant’s “Clown”. Although the price is a bit high, it goes on sale for about €15 most steam sales. Otherwise, CDKeys has it for €8.

  1. I loved being mauled as the mechanic and then watching my entire team forget that I went to mine ore for the mission.
