Surprisingly, this is a game I found through the creators Spotify. It popped up at a time where I would listen to almost strictly game OSTs (Portal 2, in particular), so it explains how I found it. I enjoyed the music and how diverse the songs felt, so I copped the game for sale and went in blind. Everhood is an UNDERTALE-like game, following your character, Red, through various adventures in the world of Everhood. The selling point is the combat. Imagine Guitar Hero, but you’re standing at the end of the track dodging the notes as they travel towards you, spawning to the beat of the music. Although it’s simple, only allowing you to move left, right and jump, it’s very effective. The game has about 6 or 7 difficulty options, ranging from easier options which allow you to take more damage, and letting you regenerate faster, to the “Insane” difficulty, where you have 1 HP and you don’t receive checkpoints in fights. Luckily the harder options you can only get in a New Game+ save.
The game is about you, Red Doll (or simply, Red), trying to get your arm back from a Blue Gnome who gave it to the tyrannical leader of the lands, Gold Pig. You travel from world to world making friends and enemies along the way, stopping for the occasional side quest. You fight a lot, most character’s just agreeing to end your life because you bumped into them or was just in the wrong place in the wrong time. The entire thing is very cartoonish, but the game doesn’t mind getting serious occasionally. Everhood uses the same handful of characters for each area, though, but it’s closer to a group of friends travelling around the world. Obviously, as required by being an indie game, the game has deep lore and meaning, not that it makes much sense to me, but it’s enough to enjoy what’s going on.
I really can’t sell the combat in this game. When paired with the great music, it really makes for an experience. There’re no common enemies and every fight is a unique boss. I find myself going back to the game just to enjoy the bosses or the music again. The battles are done up so dramatically, it’s all so fast and when you finally sightread a fight and beat it, it’s just all so ecstatic. It’s certainly one of the best indie games I’ve played, and at such a low price, generally going on sale for €5, I’d recommend it to everyone

Absolute banger soundtrack and phenomenal gameplay. I like that one frog guy since he has the easiest fight in the game
